In-person French tutoring for the next generation of confident speakers

1. What age do you accept students from?

We offer French lessons for children and teenagers between the ages of 4 and 17. The content and teaching approach are adapted to each student's age, grade level, and individual needs.

2. My child does not speak any French. Can they start with you?

Yes. We welcome both complete beginners and students who are already learning French at school.

3. My child is in French Immersion. Can you help them?

Yes. We work with students from a variety of programs, including French Immersion, Francophone schools, French as a Second Language programs, and private schools.

4. My child is already very strong in French. Can your lessons still help?

Yes. Depending on the student's level, we can work on vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, oral communication, and language enrichment.

5. How do you determine my child's French level?

The student's level is determined based on their age, educational background, information provided by the family, and, when necessary, an assessment during the first lessons. Here is the link for the quick level assessment to determine your child level.

6. Do you follow my child’s school curriculum?

Yes, if you select School Support as one of your child’s learning goals. In this case, lessons can be aligned with your child’s school curriculum, grade-level expectations, current classroom work, and areas where additional support is needed.

Parents may provide school materials, assignments, textbook information, or access to the school’s online learning platform so that the tutor can align lessons with the student’s classroom work. Materials should be provided at least 48 hours before the lesson whenever preparation is required.

If School Support is not selected, lessons will focus on the learning goals chosen during registration.

7. Can you help my child with homework?

Yes, if School Support is selected. The tutor can help your child understand and complete French homework, assignments, projects, and other school-related work while also making sure the student understands the concepts being covered.

School materials should be provided at least 48 hours before the lesson whenever the tutor needs to review or prepare them in advance.

Our goal is not simply to complete the work for the student, but to help them develop the skills and understanding needed to become more independent.

If another program is selected, we can also help, when appropriate. However, our primary objective is to develop the student's skills so that they gradually become more independent.

8. Is your tutoring only for homework and school support?

No. School Support is only one of the learning goals available.

During registration, parents can select the areas they would like their child to focus on, including:

• Begin Learning French

• Overall French Improvement

• Improve Reading

• Improve Writing

• Improve Speaking

• Grammar

• Vocabulary

• Comprehension

• Confidence Speaking French

• School Support

• Address Specific Difficulties in French

• DELF Preparation

• AP French

• Other

The student’s lessons are then planned according to the learning goals selected during registration, their current level, age, and individual needs.

9. My child is having difficulty reading in French. Can you help?

Yes. Particularly with younger learners, we can work on sounds, phonological awareness, decoding, reading fluency, and reading comprehension.

10. Do you work on speaking skills?

Yes. Oral communication is an essential part of language learning. Students are regularly encouraged to speak, answer questions, describe, tell stories, and express their ideas in French.

11. Are lessons private or group-based?

We offer different options depending on availability and student needs, including private, semi-private, and small-group lessons.

12. How do I decide whether a group or private lesson is best for my child?

Parents choose the tutoring format they feel is most appropriate for their child when registering.

Private lessons may be a good option for students who benefit from individualized attention, have specific learning goals, or prefer to work at their own pace.

Group lessons may be a good option for students who enjoy learning with others, benefit from interaction, and are comfortable participating in a small-group environment.

If, after working with your child, we feel that a different format may better support their learning, we may recommend moving from a group to private lessons or, when appropriate, from private lessons to a group.

The final decision remains with the parent or guardian.

13. Are children in the same group the same age and level?

Students are grouped according to age and French level to create an appropriate learning environment.

Our current age groupings are:

• Ages 4 to 6

• Ages 7 to 9

• Ages 10 to 12

• Ages 13 and up

Within each age group, we also consider the students’ French level so that they can learn and participate comfortably with peers at a similar stage.

For semi-private tutoring, two students learn together and should be at a reasonably similar level. This format can work well for siblings, friends, or two students who would benefit from learning with a peer.

14. How many students are in a group?

Our group classes are intentionally kept small:

• Ages 4 to 6: maximum of 4 students

• Ages 7 and up: maximum of 6 students

Small groups allow students to participate actively, practise speaking with their peers, and benefit from a real classroom dynamic while still receiving meaningful attention from the instructor.

Semi-private tutoring is limited to 2 students.

15. Are lessons offered in person or online?

Our Children & Teens tutoring is primarily offered in person. We believe that in-person learning provides the best environment for younger students to stay engaged, interact with their tutor, and focus throughout the lesson.

Online lessons are offered only in limited circumstances, for example when:

• a student is temporarily away or unable to attend in person; or

• an older student is able to work independently online, remain focused, and participate fully without supervision.

Online tutoring for children and teens is therefore considered on a case-by-case basis and is not the standard format for this program.

16. How long is each lesson?

Each tutoring session is 1 hour.

17. How long will it take for my child to make progress?

There is no single timeline that applies to every student. Each child learns at a different pace.

Progress depends on several factors, including:

• the student’s starting level;

• the learning goals selected;

• the frequency and consistency of lessons;

• how much exposure they have to French outside of class;

• practice between lessons;

• the student’s age and learning style; and

• their individual ability and ease with language learning.

Some students naturally acquire languages more quickly, while others need more repetition, practice, and time to develop the same skills. For this reason, two students starting at a similar level may progress at very different rates.

Our focus is on steady, meaningful progress based on each student’s individual learning needs, rather than promising that a specific level will be reached within a fixed period of time.

18. Does my child need to practise between lessons?

Regular exposure to French is strongly recommended. Depending on the student's age and program, the instructor may recommend reading, exercises, or short activities between sessions.

19. Will my child always have the same instructor?

Yes, as long as your child remains in the same scheduled time slot and the instructor continues to be available.

If you decide to change your child’s class time and would like to keep the same instructor, you will need to check the online schedule to see whether that instructor is available at the new time.

Changing your child’s schedule may result in a change of instructor.

20. Can I request a specific instructor?

Yes. When booking your child’s classes, you can view the schedule and select from the available times offered by our tutors.

If you would like your child to work with a specific instructor, simply select a time when that instructor is available.

Please note that instructor availability may vary throughout the year.

21. What happens if my child misses a class?

If your child misses a class, they will receive the material that was covered so they can review the missed work.

They may also ask their instructor questions about the material during a future lesson.

In addition, students may register for our French Skills Lab, a complimentary group support session offered once a month on a Thursday from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM throughout the school year.

The French Skills Lab gives students an additional opportunity to ask questions, review concepts, and receive support with material they may have missed.

22. Can we change our child’s class time every week?

No. Students are enrolled in a regular weekly time slot to provide consistency for both the student and the instructor.

If your child’s regular schedule needs to change, you can use our online scheduling system to select a different available time, subject to our scheduling and rescheduling policies.

Frequent week-to-week schedule changes are not offered.

23. Can we pause lessons during vacations?

Pauses are permitted during official school holidays and scheduled school breaks, in accordance with our policies.

Vacations taken outside of the regular school holiday calendar are not considered scheduled program breaks and do not automatically qualify for a pause.

24. Can I register two siblings together?

Yes. Siblings may take semi-private lessons together when their ages, French levels, and learning goals are reasonably compatible.

If we find that the students have significantly different levels or learning needs, we may recommend separate lessons so that each child can receive instruction that is appropriate for their level.

Parents ultimately decide which tutoring format they would like to select.

25. Do you prepare students for the DELF?

Yes. DELF preparation is one of the learning goals parents can select during registration.

Preparation can focus on the skills required for the student’s DELF level, including reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

26. Do you guarantee an improvement in school grades?

We cannot guarantee a specific grade or academic result because every student progresses at a different pace and many factors can influence school performance.

Our goal is to strengthen the student’s French-language skills, understanding, learning strategies, and confidence so that they are better equipped to succeed at school.

We have seen our students make meaningful academic progress, including improvements in their French performance and school results. However, we prefer to focus on each child’s individual progress rather than promise a specific grade increase.

27. How do I register my child?

Registration is completed online.

1. Complete the registration form with your child’s age, grade, French-learning experience, and learning goals.

2. Review the available tutoring times and instructor availability.

3. Select the tutoring package that best suits your child’s needs.

4. Complete your payment online.

5. Schedule your child’s classes using the available times shown in the booking system.

Once registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation email with the next steps and any additional information needed before your child’s first class.
